Sun and Moon,
1948
The subjects
of this piece consist of fourteen dark blue birds and fourteen white
birds. You'll notice that the contrast between day and night surfaces in Escher's work
once again, although instead of being in separate places (as in Day
and Night), they are combined and layered over each other. Each set of
birds creates not only a foreground, but a background for the others
as well. This yields a particularly transitory experience.
